THE NEW SCIENTIFIC FINDINGS

The research has conducted to assess the performance of students in Three Modalities of English Language among Sophomore College Students of Thai Nguyen University. Base on performances of the students’ language modalities including reading, listening and speaking and survey technique for teacher assessment of responses and teacher-made test to determine students’ performance the dissertation has found these important results:

1. Males exceed than females among the student respondents whose parents have tertiary education with majority come from rural areas. Majority or 95.70 percent had their high school education in public schools.  

2. Students have generally low performance in all the test areas in the learning modality of reading with an average correct rating of 22.72 percent and a verbal equivalent of low average. 

3. There is significant different on the performance of students in the three language modality test groups stratified according to profile variables.

4. Majority of the skill items being evaluated are rarely practiced by the sophomore students. Teacher respondents consider only reading comprehension and context clues as the more important student’s skills given emphasis in the sophomore stage.

5. Student’s reading performance is not related to the teacher’s assessment while student’s listening performance is related to the teacher’s assessment and is more reflective of the true assessment and evaluation of the teachers.  Student’s speaking performance are not related to the teacher’s frequency assessment but related to their degree of importance assessment.

6. Proposed resource materials are based on the low performance scores of students to enrich students’ learning in the three modalities of language.

APPLICATION FEASIBILITY AND RECOMMEDATIONS FOR FURTHER STUDIES

• Application feasibility:

-  Results of the study will provide students with rich information and knowledge as regards to how they could enrich their learning in the three modes of language. They will also benefit from the resource materials developed.

- The study will benefit the teachers through the experience gained in the utilization of the resource materials developed for language modalities to their students. They would also be equipped with materials that they can use to effectively improve their students language performance.

- The results of the study will provide administrators a clear basis for introducing the innovation that may come out of the study to their respective schools.

- Policy-makers will gain insights on the typical language modalities prevalent among the students and would initiate advocacy and policies pertinent to the findings of the study.

-The researcher will provide other teachers with useful method and techniques that can improve their effectiveness in teaching lessons. They can reduce disadvantages and teach students in a more effective way.

• Recommendation for further studies:

- Students’ weaknesses in reading, listening and speaking must be given attention by administrators.

- A similar study may be conducted along modalities of language.

- Future researchers may be interested in this topic so they can conduct similar study related on writing.

NHỮNG KẾT QUẢ MỚI CỦA LUẬN ÁN

Nghiên cứu này đã được tiến hành nhằm đánh giá năng lực các kĩ năng tiếng Anh của sinh viên năm thứ hai của một số trường đại học thành viên của Đại học Thái Nguyên. Luận án đã công bố được những kết quả quan trọng sau đây:

1. Tỉ lệ sinh viên nam có cha mẹ đạt trình độ đào tạo phổ thông trung học nhiều hơn sinh viên nữ.

2. Sinh viên đạt kết quả thấp trong tất cả các bài kiểm tra kĩ năng đọc và nói, tỉ lệ câu trả lời đúng đạt 22.72%

3. Có sự khác biệt điển hình về năng lực của sinh viên trong ba kĩ năng điều tra đọc, nghe và nói.

4. Sinh viên năm thứ hai ít được thực hành các kĩ năng đọc, nghe và nói. Giảng viên chỉ coi trọng đọc hiểu và đọc trong ngữ cảnh.

5. Không có mối liên hệ nào giữa năng lực đọc với đánh giá của giảng viên trong khi có mối liên hệ giữa năng lực nghe của sinh viên với đánh giá của giảng viên. Không có mối quan hệ giữa năng lực nói với đánh giá thường xuyên của giảng viên nhưng lại có mối quan hệ với mức độ đánh giá tầm quan trọng.

6. Luận án đã đề xuất biên soạn các nguồn tài liệu nhằm nâng cao quá trình học tập các kĩ năng tiếng Anh của sinh viên mà đánh giá năng lực của họ đạt kết quả thấp.

KHẢ NĂNG ỨNG DỤNG TRONG THỰC TIỄN VÀ NHỮNG VẪN ĐỀ CẦN TIẾP TỤC NGHIÊN CỨU 

• Khả năng ứng dụng trong thực tiễn:

-     Sinh  viên tham khảo luận án này để nắm được cách nâng cao chất lượng học ba kĩ năng tiếng anh.

-     Giảng viên có thể tham khảo luận án này để áp dụng nguồn tài liệu về ba kĩ năng và phương pháp dạy học hiệu quả, nâng cao hơn nữa năng lực ngôn ngữ.

-     Các nhà quản lý có thể tham khảo luận án này để có nền tảng rõ ràng về sự đổi mới mà có thể ứng dụng trong các nhà trường.

-  Luận án sẽ cung cấp cho giảng viên về cho ba kĩ năng đọc, nghe và nói

• Những vấn đề cần tiếp tục nghiên cứu:  

- Nghiên cứu và biên soạn thêm tài liệu tham khảo chuyên sâu cho các kỹ năng ngôn ngữ của sinh viên.

- Nghiên cứu dựa trên hạn chế của sinh viên trong kĩ năng đọc, nghe và nói và tiếp tục tiến hành liên quan đến kĩ năng viết của sinh viên.
