THE NEW SCIENTIFIC FINDINGS

The research has the following important findings:

1. The morphological competence of first year college students in terms of meaning of root words, word formation, compounding of words, prefixes, affixes, suffixes and word derivation are above 50 percent.

2. The level of students’ performance in the use of syntax in terms of phrases, clauses, sentences, functions, is average.

3. Morphology and syntax performances are significantly different and are therefore not related to each other.

4. The students do not practice and use the skills as often in the class and considered these skills as moderately important to be developed by the students.

5. The teacher’s assessment and students’ morpho-syntactic competencies are significantly different and are independent of each other.

6. Criteria are considered and used as concrete basis for the design of integrative learning exercises to enhance morpho-syntactic competencies of students.

APPLICATION FEASIBILITY AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FURTHER STUDIES

• Application feasibility:

- Results of the study will provide the administrators information on the current status regarding morphological and syntactic competencies of first year college students in English language for them to have an opportunity to choose the best training program to attend to in order to improve their strategies in teaching morphology and syntax.

- Guiding English teachers in the assessments of the student’s morphological and syntactic competencies. Likewise, the teachers may propose some exercises to improve the student’s morphological and syntactic competencies.

- This study will serve as input for them to be aware on their morphological and syntactic competencies. This would give them a challenge to improve their weak points and enhance their overall performance in English.

• Recommendation for further studies:

Conduct similar studies related to developing morphological and syntactic competences.

NHỮNG KẾT QUẢ MỚI CỦA LUẬN ÁN

Nghiên cứu đã có những kết luận quan trọng sau:

1. Khả năng sử dụng hình thái học của sinh viên năm thứ nhất về nghĩa của từ, cấu tạo từ, từ nối, tiền tố, phụ tố, hậu tố và từ gốc đều ở mức độ trung bình.

2. Mức độ thực hiện của sinh viên trong việc sử dụng cú pháp về cụm từ, mệnh đề, câu và chức năng ở mức trung bình.

3. Không mối liên hệ có ý nghĩa nào giữa hình thái học và cú pháp của sinh viên với các đặc điểm đưa ra điều tra.

4. Sinh viên không thực hành và sử dụng kỹ năng này thường xuyên trong lớp coi là tương đối quan trọng, họ tự học.

5. Không mối liên hệ có ý nghĩa nào giữa việc đánh giá của giảng viên và năng lực hình thái - cú pháp của sinh viên.

6. Luận án đã thiết kế các bài tập tích hợp để nâng cao năng lực hình thái - cú pháp của sinh viên.

KHẢ NĂNG ỨNG DỤNG TRONG THỰC TIỄN VÀ NHỮNG VẪN ĐỀ CẦN TIẾP TỤC NGHIÊN CỨU

• Khả năng ứng dụng trong thực tiễn:

- Các nhà quản lý tham khảo luận án này để biết rỏ mức độ  năng lực hình thái học, cú pháp tiếng Anh của sinh viên đại học năm thứ nhất, lựa chọn chương trình đào tạo  tốt hơn cho sinh viên.

- Giảng viên có thể tham khảo luận án này để đánh giá năng lực về hình thái học, cú pháp tiếng Anh của sinh viên, từ đó đề xuất một số bài tập để nâng cao năng lực về hình thái học, cú pháp tiếng Anh của sinh viên.

- Sinh viên có thể tham khảo luận án này nhận thức được mức độ năng lực hình thái học và cú pháp tiếng Anh của họ, từ đó cải thiện điểm yếu và nâng cao năng lực tổng thể trong tiếng Anh của họ.

• Những vấn đề cần tiếp tục nghiên cứu:

Nghiên cứu trên các khía cạnh liên quan đến việc phát triển khả năng sử dụng hình thái học, cú pháp tiếng Anh của người học.
