THE NEW SCIENTIFIC FINDINGS

            The research has found the following important results:

1. College students have equal gender distribution, well-educated parents, not well exposed to the English media, come from urban areas, and pursued their secondary education in public schools.

2. College students have skills in sentence combining with average performance in constructing sentences, connecting ideas, using words effectively and developing paragraph. Male students’ performance in combining sentences, connecting ideas and developing paragraphs is different from the female students’ performance. College students performed their textual skill in using words effectively, but the performance of the students in this area is significantly different.

3. Teachers considered all the component skills important for students to develop and they had a very high assessment of the degree of importance of the different items under the textual skills. However, students’ performance in the areas of combining sentence, constructing sentences and connecting ideas are not related to the teachers’ assessment.

4. The prototype lessons are designed to provide a learning material that would address the inadequacies of the student population, this being part of the emerging trend of responsive and outcome -based language education.

APPLICATION FEASIBILITY AND RECOMMEDATIONS FOR FURTHER STUDIES

• Application feasibility:

            - Findings of this study will provide relevant input for administrators at Thai Nguyen University to design effective writing lessons for the first year students.

            - The prototype lessons will be applied to enhance textual skill of first year college students of the Thai Nguyen system.

• Recommendation for further studies:

      From the findings and conclusions of the study, the following recommendations are offered:

            Further study on supplementary workbook on textual skill.

            Further study on other factors that may affect students’ textual skill.

NHỮNG KẾT QUẢ MỚI CỦA LUẬN ÁN

Nghiên cứu đã tìm ra được những kết quả quan trọng sau đây:

1. Tỷ lệ sinh viên nam và nữ của Đại học Thái Nguyên tương đối đồng đều, cha mẹ sinh viên có nền tảng giáo dục tốt, các sinh viên không tiếp xúc nhiều với các phương tiện truyền thông bằng tiếng Anh, các em đến từ các khu đô thị và học trung học trong các trường công lập.

2. Sinh viên đạt trình độ trung bình khi làm các bài nối câu, dựng câu, nối ý, sử dụng từ và phát triển đoạn. Kết quả làm các bài nối câu, nối ‎ý và phát triển đoạn của nam sinh viên kém hơn các nữ sinh viên. Kết quả sinh viên làm bài sử dụng từ một cách hiệu quả rất khác nhau.

3. Giáo viên coi việc phát triển tất cả các kỹ năng viết này đều rất quan trọng đối với sinh viên và họ có đánh giá rất cao về mức độ quan trọng của các dạng khác nhau của kỹ năng viết. Tuy nhiên, kết quả làm bài của sinh viên trong các lĩnh vực nối câu, dựng câu và nối ý tưởng không giống như phần đánh giá mà giáo viên mong muốn.

4. Những bài học mẫu được thiết kế nhằm cung cấp tài liệu học tập để có thể giải quyết một số vấn đề liên quan đến việc viết tiếng Anh của sinh viên.

KHẢ NĂNG ỨNG DỤNG TRONG THỰC TIỄN VÀ NHỮNG VẪN ĐỀ CẦN TIẾP TỤC NGHIÊN CỨU

• Khả năng ứng dụng trong thực tiễn:

             - Các nhà quản lý của Đại học Thái Nguyên có thể tham khảo luận án này để thiết kế những bài giảng dạy viết tiếng Anh hiệu quả cho sinh viên năm thứ nhất.

             - Những bài học mẫu có thể được triển khai đến sinh viên nhằm giúp nâng cao khả năng viết tiếng Anh của sinh viên năm thứ nhất.

• Những vấn đề cần tiếp tục nghiên cứu:

            - Nghiên cứu để cho ra thêm sách bài tập bổ trợ chuyên sâu cho kỹ năng viết của  sinh viên.

            - Nghiên cứu các yếu tố khác ảnh hưởng đến khả năng viết tiếng Anh của sinh viên.
